Keep Pumping: Parenting Through Every Season

God sees the seeds you are planting. He sees the prayers you are praying. He sees the late-night talks, the quiet tears, the hard conversations, and the moments when you choose patience instead of frustration.

Every stage of a child’s life brings something new.

Toddlers are busy discovering the world. Preschoolers are asking questions about everything. Elementary children are learning who they are. Then come those middle school years — Lord, help us all! By high school, they are stretching toward independence, and before we know it, they are stepping into adulthood.

Each season can bring excitement, joy, nervousness, and even a little fear. Just when we think we have one stage figured out, here comes another one.

Several years ago, while I was on vacation in Poland, I saw a water pump in the middle of town. Of course, I had to try it.

Let me tell you, pumping water is hard work.

Maybe I was a little out of shape, but I thought I would never get water to come out. My husband and daughter made it look easy. I kept pumping, and after a few tries, I finally saw water.

I was so excited.

Parenting can feel a lot like that water pump. We pray. We teach. We correct. We encourage. We repeat ourselves. We wonder if anything is getting through.

And then one day, we see a little water.

We hear our child use kind words. We see them make a wise choice. We watch them show courage, compassion, or self-control. It may not look like a flood, but it is a sign that something is flowing.

Proverbs 22:6 reminds us, “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.”

That does not mean parenting will always be easy. Training takes time. It takes patience. It takes consistency. It takes faith.

Some seasons will require more pumping than others.

The toddler years may require patience.
The preschool years may require creativity.
The elementary years may require guidance.
The middle school years may require deep breaths and extra prayer.
The high school years may require trust.

But in every season, we keep pouring into them.

We keep teaching.
We keep loving.
We keep correcting.
We keep praying.
We keep modeling what faith, resilience, and character look like.

You may not see the water right away, but don’t stop pumping.

God sees the seeds you are planting. He sees the prayers you are praying. He sees the late-night talks, the quiet tears, the hard conversations, and the moments when you choose patience instead of frustration.

So this week, take time to celebrate one positive moment with your child.

Did they make a good choice?
Did they show kindness?
Did they try again after failing?
Did they listen the second time instead of the tenth?

Celebrate it.

Those moments remind us that the water is still flowing.

So, parent, keep pumping. God is working in you, through you, and in the heart of your child.
